Bournemouth Borough Council’s Adoption Services Team are dedicated to finding permanent and loving homes for the many children who cannot live with their birth families and consequently have a plan for adoption.Ofsted_Image

We will be able to provide you with all the information and advice you need to help you decide if adoption is for you. We have a team of helpful, understanding and experienced adoption social workers that are here to support you through every step of the process.

Why choose the Bournemouth Adoption Service?

  • We have a dedicated, friendly, supportive and experienced team who will guide you through the adoption assessment process and beyond.
  • We work closely with our childcare teams and understand the needs of each child whose plan is adoption. Consequently we make excellent matches between children and adopters and have a low placement breakdown rate compared to the national average.
  • Our adoption service was judged as outstanding with no recommendations to improve in our last Ofsted inspection in 2012. In an inspection of the whole of Children’s Social Care in 2014, the adoption team was again not given any recommendations to improve.

  • The adoption team was awarded the 2012 National Adoption Service of the Year by the British Association of Adoption & Fostering with the award presented by the Children’s Minister, Edward Timpson MP. To date, the Bournemouth Adoption team is the only singular local authority team ever to be given the accolade.

  • Through our award and reputation, the Bournemouth adoption team were approached by filmmakers and was featured in the 2014 ITV series, Wanted: A Family Of My Own, which was presented by adoptee, Nicky Campbell. The series followed the team assessing a prospective adopters journey, concluding with the placement of their child. A further episode featured the team successfully finding a family for a child with significant health needs.
  • We provide a range of post adoption support services, including regular newsletters, seminars for adopters, regular family events, groups for children and young people, and access to medical and psychologist support.

In a recent edition of the Bournemouth Council's BH Life magazine|, Sue Crombleholme, one of the Family Support Practitioners, talks about adoption and how we prepare children for adoption.
