Equipment to Help At Home

You may be finding everyday tasks difficult, such as:

  • using stairs and steps
  • washing, dressing and using the toilet
  • getting in or out of a chair.

This may be because you have:

  • a physical disability
  • a long term illness
  • become older and less able.

With the right support and equipment, we could help you become more active and independent at home.

Finding out your needs

When you first get in touch|, we may assess your needs over the telephone and give you advice and information. To qualify for services, your needs must be critical or substantial|. If it appears they are, we visit you at home to discuss how you can be helped. You can involve a family member or friend, if you wish.

What we do

Our occupational therapy staff work with you to:

  • assess the difficulties you have
  • suggest safer and more effective ways of doing everyday tasks for you and the people who help you
  • advise on equipment you can buy to help you at home with tasks such as preparing a meal or personal care
  • loan essential equipment to help with day to day living such as:
    • special cutlery
    • raised toilet seat
    • aids for cooking
    • chair or bed raisers
    • bathing or showering aids
    • specialist chairs or beds
  • advise on telecare—personal alarms, sensors and monitoring devices
  • arrange minor changes to your home, such as hand rails, if you qualify, including recommendations to Housing Landlord if you are a Bournemouth Borough Council tenant
  • advise on major changes to your home, such as a stair lift or level access shower, and help you apply if you are an owner-occupier or live in housing association or privately rented accommodation
  • advise if you are eligible for Disabled Facilities Grant for major adaptations to your home.
