Disabled Parking in Council Car Parks

Bournemouth Borough Council recognise that the disabled who live, work or visit the borough may need to park closer to amenities or their destination of choice.  All council car parks have an element of spaces reserved for disabled blue badge holders.  All vehicles parked in a disabled space must follow the following guidance to avoid being issued with a ticket.

• Free Parking in Bournemouth Borough Council Car Parks is only given where vehicles are displaying a Tax Disc that shows nil tax ‘DISABLED’. – These are issued to the vehicle not the person.
• When using a marked disabled bay ensure that a valid disabled badge is displayed in the vehicle i.e. so the expiry date can be seen through the windscreen.
• Please note that temporary medical problems where a disabled badge has not been issued would not allow you to use a marked disabled bay.

Disabled Parking On The Road

As well as designated spaces within our car parks, we have also installed disabled bays on the road at convenient locations across the borough.  These bays are clearly marked with the word 'Disabled' painted on the road.  In town centres these bay are restricted to a maximum stay of 3 hours between 8am and 6pm.  Outside of these times they remain as disabled bays, but have no time limit imposed on them.

Disabled motorists or their family/carers must comply with the regulations of the Blue Badge Scheme and display a disabled badge correctly with the wheelchair symbol and expiry date showing through the windscreen. A time clock must also be displayed that is set to the arrival time in that location.

Residential Disabled Bays

Residents of Bournemouth may apply for a disabled bay to be installed outside (or as near as possible) to their property.  There are however some restrictions and considerations to take into account when applying, as listed below;

• An application is not usually considered if off road parking is available (i.e. a driveway).
• The disabled bay will be open for use by anyone with a blue disabled badge.
• Bays will be installed to the Department for Transport standard size of 6.6m long.
• There is a charge of £255 per bay unless the applicant is road tax exempt, when no charge is levied (proof required).
• The associated sign will be attached to your front wall if appropriate, or a post will be installed.
• The applicant must be the blue badge holder residing at the address and must have access to a vehicle registered to the same address.
• All parking restrictions (including disabled bays) must go through a public consultation.
• On completion of the public consultation, if successful, any fee will be invoiced (payment must be received before the bay(s) can be installed).
• No maximum length of stay is applied to residential disabled bays.
• Applications are dealt with in batches on a periodic basis.

Corporate Disabled Bays

If you operate a business or an organisation in Bournemouth, and would like to request a disabled bay to be installed adjacent to your premises, please complete the corporate disabled bay application form|.  Terms and conditions do apply so please ensure these are read fully prior to your submission.

The main conditions are outlined below and detailed on the form.

• On-road disabled bays will only be considered where facilities are shown to be inadequate on your own premises.
• All parking restrictions (including disabled bays) must go through a public consultation.
• A maximum stay of 3 hours between 8am and 6pm will be applied to corporate disabled bays (outside of these times they remain as disabled bays, but have no time limit imposed on them).
• A fee of £350 is charged per bay.
• The proposed disabled bay must complete the public consultation process, when if successful, the fee will be invoiced (payment must be received before the bay(s) can be installed).
