Cycling

child cycle

Cycling solves so many problems of modern living: it keeps you fit; it’s fast and cheap and it is a sustainable mode of transport which is good for the world.

Cycling offers Teens an opportunity of independence, and allows them to travel to school with friends.  Bournemouth Borough Council offers cycle training to enhance safety awareness through their own scheme and the national scheme of Bikeability.  www.dft.gov.uk/bikeability

Cycle training

Cycle training for children is a vital way of increasing their road safety awareness, preparing them for independent cycling on the road which helps to prevent potential accidents. The cycle training scheme is managed and promoted by the Road Safety team.

There are three, age related elements:

Phase 1 (£10) is suitable for accompanied riders usually in year 4/5 as an introduction to cycling on roads.  It takes 4 hours to teach and usually takes place in the playground.  It covers simple manoeuvres such as looking and indicating through eight activities which are continually assessed.  There is a certificate for successful completion.

Phase 2 (£15) targets pupils in Year 5/6 preparing to cycle independently, especially when they move up to secondary school.  It takes six hours to cover the course which is predominantly on-road. The participants receive expert guidance on what they need to consider while cycling.  This includes basic cycle maintenance, appropriate clothing and lights, how to undertake the main manoeuvres on-road followed by lots of practice on quiet roads.  It is a continual assessment course with a badge and certificate when successfully completed.

To participate pupils need:

  • A road worthy bike
  • The ability to ride it
  • Be at least 10 years old
  • Have permission to participate

This course can be delivered in school or alternatively it is available at the Road Safety Centre in Kings Park, Boscombe on Saturday mornings and in the holidays from Easter til November.

Phase 3: Urban cycling skills for 16+ years. This course is for commuter cyclists training them in the skills of road placement on busier roads and multilane junctions. More details in the Adult cycling section.
