Cycling in Bournemouth

Cycling solves so many problems of modern living: it keeps you fit; it’s fast and cheap and it is a sustainable mode of transport which is good for the environment. Bournemouth is well placed benefiting from two National Cycle Network| routes 25 and 2 and a network of on-road and off-road cycle routes. Bournemouth Borough Council is committed to further encouraging and developing cycling across the conurbation in partnership with our neighbouring authorities through the Draft Cycle Strategy.

 

In a recent study by Steer Davies Gleave, Bournemouth was rated second highest in terms of potential for cycling (second only to London). This is based on the high proportion of commuting trips being of a suitable distance to cycle (1-8km), the flatness of the land and the social demographics of the town. Cycling levels have increased by over 30% in Bournemouth in the past five years. Between 2007/08 and 2009/10 the number of young people walking to school has increased by 7%; 42% of our trips to school are now made on foot and 5.2% by cycle.

 

Cycling on roads requires competence and this can be supported by taking training designed at different levels to suit your needs; whether you are a young person| getting ready to ride alone on the road or an adult| looking to boost your confidence.

 

Active Bournemouth Cycle Forum

As part of the Bournemouth Partnership a Cycling Forum has been established to progress cycling issues in Bournemouth and also consider wider cycling issues. The forum is independent of the Council but Councillors and Officers with highway responsibilities attend the forum together with representatives from local cycle groups, the Police and anyone else interested - the group is open to all.

The 2012/13 local area cycle map is available to download| here. Or pick one up from the Bournemouth Tourist Information Centre, any Bournemouth Library| or, at the reception of the Town Hall Annexe, St Stephen's Road, Bournemouth BH2 6EA.

 

Bourne Valley Greenway

Greenways are largely car-free, off-road routes which are sustainable transport corridors for shared use by cyclists, walkers and where practical horse-riders.

The Bourne Valley Greenway| was launched in May 2004 and runs continuously for 6.5km between Bournemouth Town Centre and Canford Heath. The Greenway goes through Bournemouth Gardens, Talbot Heath and Bourne Bottom. By Cycle the route takes around 30 minutes from Ringwood Road near the Mountbatten Arms Roundabout to Bournemouth Town Centre, making this a viable means of commuting.

 

Castleman Trailway

One of Dorset's gentlest way-marked routes, this 16 mile tailway follows much of the old Dorchester to Southampton railway line.  The trailway takes you through some of East Dorset's stunning landscape. Further information can be found on Dorset County Council's website|.

 

Seafront Cycling

The restriction to cycling on the seafront applies during July & August and between the times of 10 a.m. & 6 p.m. This applies to the entire seafront between Bournemouth & Poole except for those sections that are public highway (the section between Boscombe Pier and the barrier approaching Bournemouth Pier is public highway). Monitoring of the use of the seafront by cyclists, particularly in relation to pedestrians, will continue to assess whether future changes or relaxation should take place.
