Garlic Mustard

Garlic Mustard - Alliaria petiolata

Garlic Mustard is the only member of the cabbage family that gives off the distinct smell of garlic. All the other plants with a similar scent, including the garlic, onion and leeks, are in the lily family (Allium). The genus names of both take their name from the Latin for garlic. Pick a leaf off the plant, crush it gently in your hand, and then have a sniff  -  if you like garlic, you will love the smell of these leaves.

The plant has also been called Jack-by-the-hedge and Poor Man's Mustard. It is an important plant for the Orange Tip butterfly, whose caterpillars feed on it.
