Harebell

The beautiful Harebell - Campanula rotundifolia

In Scotland, this lovely flower is called the Bluebell. In Scotland, the flower the English call 'Bluebell' is known as the Wild Hyacinth. It is very much linked with magic in folklore, and goes by names including Witches Thimbles, Fairy Bells and Old Man's Bells ('Old Man' referring to the Devil).

The botanical name, rotundifolia, means 'with rounded leaves'. However, the heart-shaped leaves at the base of the plant often wither away before it flowers, leaving the long thin leaves of the upper stems. Hengistbury Head is a good place to find this species.
