Red Campion - Silene dioica
The Red Campion is a colourful flower that can be found through much of the year. It grows in a variety of habitats, including woodland and hedgerows. The first part of the Latin name for the plant, Silene, comes from Silenus, who was the drunken and very merry Greek God of Woodlands. The second part of the name, dioica, means 'two houses', and it is a reference to the fact that each plant of Red Campion has flowers of just one sex - so therefore, two plants are needed to form seeds.
