Green Flag Award winner since 1999
The Upper, Central and Lower Gardens are located in the Bourne Valley, between the Borough Boundary and Bournemouth Pier.
The Gardens retain much of their original character and are Listed Grade II* in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens. They provide a range of facilities including tennis, putting, mini-golf, children’s play, art exhibition, café, ice cream kiosk and tethered balloon.
The Lower section of the Gardens hosts a number of major events from the Kids Free Fun Festival to the famous 100 year-old tradition of “Candle Illuminations” which attracts many thousands of visitors to the Gardens on summer evenings. This year, 'Flowers by Candlelight' runs every Wednesday night on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th of August. Tapers are available for lighting candles from dusk onwards.
The Upper and Central sections are quieter, maintaining their natural feel. Guided walks and interpretation points are provided to highlight the diversity of flora and fauna and history of the Gardens.
Cycle paths have been introduced within the Upper and Central sections as part of the Council’s overall cycling strategy.
The Gardens are well maintained by site-based grounds staff and ensure, together with the Community Parks Officer, that the Gardens are safe to use and provide a pleasant environment for all to enjoy.
