Bluetongue

Update - 14 February 2008

Bluetongue is an animal disease only, it does not affect humans and meat will still be safe to eat. It only affects ruminants, that is cattle, sheep, goats, deer and llamas. It does not affect pigs.

Following the discovery of the disease in this country DEFRA have declared a new protection zone which imposes restrictions on animal movements. The protection zone now covers all of Dorset and this includes the Borough of Bournemouth. No ruminant animals can be moved out of the protection zone.

Information on the disease is constantly being updated on the DEFRA  website, where you can also see a map of the protection zone.
