Electricity

The law requires that all systems shall at all times be of such construction and be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, danger.

The following points should be considered:
  • Sufficient sockets must be provided.
  • Electrical leads must be free from damage.
  • Electrical leads must not trail across areas where people may walk as this can pose a tripping hazard.
  • Electrical plugs must be correctly fitted and have the appropriate fuse installed.
  • Joining extension cables together should be avoided.
  • If Residual Current Devices (RCDs) are used then they must be tested regularly to ensure that they are operating correctly.
For more information access the Health and Safety Executive’s ‘Electrical Safety and You’ guidance booklet.

The Health and Safety Executive’s website has a comprehensive section on electricity at work.
