Making a Start with Health and Safety

When taking on the responsibility for health and safety, it can initially seem quite daunting, as there are over 200 pieces of health and safety legislation.  The Public Safety Team is here to give advice.

Registration

Premises where people are employed have a duty to register using an OSR1 form - contact us for a copy of this form or visit The Health & Safety Executive's website.

Information for Employees

Don't forget to display the Health and Safety Law Poster (ISBN 0717624935 priced at £7.50).  You can order the poster from HSE Books, Po Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 2WA, Telephone: 01787881165 or online via HSEbooks.  You can also order the poster locally at Waterstones or Borders.

This has to be displayed.

Risk Assessment

If you have more than 5 employees, the significant findings of your risk assessment must be recorded.

Gas Safety

Have the system appliances received regular inspection by a competent person?  Remember all gas appliances must receive annual safety inspection by a CORGI registered installer.

Window Safety

When considering window and glass safety, the main considerations should be:
  • Are windows cleaned safely by staff and contractors?
  • Where windows form part of a door, are they made of safety glass?
  • Is there a danger that a person could fall out of a window (the bottom edge of windows should be at least 800 mm above floor level unless there is a barrier present to prevent falls)?
  • Where there is a danger of falling out of a window at height, devices should be provided to prevent the window opening too far.
  • Can someone be injured by walking into glass doors or partitions?
