An Affordable Warmth Strategy to tackle fuel poverty
Fuel poverty occurs when someone cannot afford to adequately heat their home.
Households considered most vulnerable are:
- Those over 60 years old
- Those with disabilities or living with chronic illness
- Those with young children
The Bournemouth Private Sector House Condition Survey, conducted in 2003, concluded that 8082 households (11.2%) are in, or likely to experience, fuel poverty. With recent fuel price rises, this number may have risen to around 14,500.
The Bournemouth Affordable Warmth Partnership has been established to eliminate fuel poverty in Bournemouth. The Partnership has drawn up the “Warm and Healthy Homes” Strategy to help agencies reach vulnerable households and provide the best possible co-ordinated assistance. Many of these agencies are Bournemouth Partnership members, others are national organisations and charities.
The Warm and Healthy Homes Strategy seeks to tackle fuel poverty by increasing awareness, maximising income and improving housing.
