Licensing Act 2003

The Council’s Licensing (Act 2003) Board deals with the licensing of premises such as public hours, theatres, cinemas, restaurants, nightclubs and others in Bournemouth who wish to supply facilities for alcohol, regulated entertainment and late night refreshment.

The Licensing Act 2003 requires Licensing Authorities to publish a Statement of Licensing Policy (1.3Mb) PDF.  This document sets out the criteria that they will take into consideration, when making decisions upon applications for licensable activities, and in order to promote the four national Licensing Objectives:-

  • The Prevention of Crime and Disorder
  • The Prevention of Public Nuisance
  • Public Safety
  • The Protection of Children from Harm

Licensed premises can benefit from the local community if properly managed and well run.  They can contribute to leisure and enjoyment and support the tourism industry and local economy.

It is our intention to establish effective partnerships with local businesses, the police, communities and others to promote good practice and responsible behaviour.  A series of guidance notes are planned in order to assist applicants and interested parties.

The Statement of Licensing Policy (2.7Mb PDF) which can be viewed on this website should be read in conjunction with the Licensing Act 2003, Regulations made under the Licensing Act 2003 and the guidance issued by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
