Starting School

Your child needs a school place before they can attend school

Starting school is a big step in your child’s life. Before they can start, you need to apply for a school place.

Making sure that you choose the right school for your child will make a difference to their future development and happiness.

It's important to apply on time to give yourself the best chance of a place at the school you would most like.

When you should apply

You need to apply for a primary school place the year before your child is due to start. All children must be in education the term following their fifth birthday, so most children start when they are four.

How do I apply?

You must apply to the local authority where you live (this will be where you pay your council tax). Get in touch with them to find out how the process works in your area.

If you live in Bournemouth and wish to apply for a school either in Bournemouth or elsewhere, you can apply online. The online system can be used from the first week of September in the year you need to apply for a school place.

Paper forms are also available in most pre-schools and day nurseries in Bournemouth and from Bournemouth Children's Information Service at our customer service centre.
