The local economy and earnings

Bournemouth forms part of one of the largest urban areas in the UK.  Bournemouth has a strong financial services sector with the public services sector and tourism also forming an important part of the local economy.  The Borough has two growing universities and has been a popular destination for overseas students to learn English for a number of years.

Bournemouth's economy has been growing again since the recession with unemployment claimant numbers at lower levels than nationally and new sectors showing strong growth particularly the digital economy.  The latest employment data suggests overall employment numbers are also increasing.

Earnings data reveals in the last five years Bournemouth workers have experienced an increase in earnings.  Bournemouth residents have also experienced an increase in median earnings.  The numbers of businesses locally are also increasing.

Bournemouth also has a well qualified working-age population and a smaller proportion than nationally of young people not in employment, education or training.

The Dorset Local Economic Partnership (LEP) is a public-private partnership, its main vision is "to deliver growth through business enterprise whilst safeguarding the environment"

The Dorset LEP has a number of priorities and these can be viewed on its website.
