In 2008/9 Bournemouth residents recycled a massive 43% of their household waste - two per cent more than the previous year. Instead of being sent to landfill, this rubbish was recycled into new and useful things!
Bournemouth Council would like to say a big 'thank you' to its residents for their fantastic commitment to recycling.
However, with strict Government targets to meet, the Council is always keen to continue improving its recycling rate and reduce the amount of rubbish we produce.
And It’s not just rubbish - waste is a resource and it’s amazing what recyclable materials can be made into:
All of the newsprint manufactured here in the UK is now made from 100% recycled paper. In just seven days, a recycled newspaper can be back on the news stand
Cardboard is simply recycled back into more cardboard packaging or boxes
Recycling two glass bottles saves enough energy to boil water for five cups of tea. 100% of a glass bottle can be recycled over and over again into more glass bottles or jars
In just six weeks, a can is recycled into a range of new products such as parts of a plane, car, bike or simply another can
Plastic bottles, once it has been reused, can be recycled into plastic piping, plastic interiors for cars or aircrafts, aggregate for road surfaces or building construction or even a fleece jacket.
