Van Oord UK Ltd will dredge Poole Harbour shipping channel to allow larger vessels to enter the Port of Poole. Silt will be dumped at sea; sand and some gravel will be placed on the beaches of Swanage, Poole and Bournemouth, reproducing as far as possible the native beach’s particle size distribution. Further details are available on the attached information poster.
Replenishment of Bournemouth Beach, from Double Dykes westwards to Boscombe Pier, is expected to occur in January and February 2006, with 608,000 cubic metres of beach material. Two or three dredgers will work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including Christmas and the New Year. The beach work (connecting and moving the pipeline, bulldozing fill to shape, and surveying the volume delivered) will continue from 0600 to 2100 (Monday to Friday), and 0730 to 1800 (Saturday and Sunday). Short sections of the beach will be closed when the sand is being pumped ashore, and moved by heavy plant. The promenade will remain open even when pumping is taking place.
During the environmental studies for the dredging, a wreck was found near the channel, and the site is now protected. However, there is a chance that some material of archaeological importance may be pumped onto the beach. If you find anything you consider may be of interest, please contact us.
A second contract to complete our beach during the following winter will replenish from Boscombe Pier westwards to the Borough Boundary with Poole, using beach material dredged from commercial sources.
