Leven House

Leven House is a comfortable home in a residential area providing a supportive environment for people who have a mental illness. We provide:

  • accommodation for 18 people in private single rooms: 14 located in the main hostel, with 4 in the adjoining annexe
  • meals, if required, subject to a charge
  • shared lounges, dining room, laundry room, arts & crafts room, gardens and car park

There is a Community Care assessment process to find out if your needs can be met by the service we offer at Leven House. Applications are considered carefully according to need, by representatives from both Bournemouth Community Care Services and Dorset Healthcare NHS Trust. If we can meet your needs at Leven House, your stay will be for up to two years, depending on how long you need our support.

When you come to Leven House, we will help you move in and feel at home.

What we do

We help people with a severe mental illness work towards independence by supporting and encouraging them to:

  • increase self confidence
  • develop skills and interests
  • understand and value their own abilities
  • enjoy themselves

Your commitment

To benefit, from the services available at Leven House, you must:

  • be willing to share the environment with others
  • have clear motivation to work towards regaining your independence
  • work towards gaining a full understanding of your mental health needs
  • be willing to accept the support offered
  • share information about past history and treatments with us

You will receive a Licence Agreement when you arrive at Leven House, which details the service you can expect from us and the commitment we expect from you.

Day to day living

You will be encouraged to have a structured week, taking in a variety of education, training, leisure and other opportunities within the local community. You will be expected to share some of the household tasks and to clean your own room.

Initially you will prepare your own breakfast and lunch, with an evening meal being provided by our cook. As you progress, you will cater for yourself on a full-time basis.

You will be expected to self medicate from admission, although support will be given initially until you have gained confidence with this.

As with any other communal living arrangements, there are certain house rules, which are designed to protect everyone living here.

You are welcome to have visitors but we ask that you take responsibility for them whilst on the premises. Visitors also need to abide by house rules.

How we offer support

During your stay, you will have a named member of staff called a keyworker, who will liaise with everyone involved in your care and work with you to:

  • find out all your needs
  • agree personal goals and achievements
  • help you reach your potential
  • help with problems and worries
  • review your progress and re-assess your needs

How much does it cost?

The majority of your rent is paid through Housing Benefit and the Supporting People Scheme, although there will be a small amount to pay each week to cover electricity and other household bills. You will also be required to pay for your meals on a weekly basis.

Many people who stay at Leven House move on to independent or other supported accommodation. We work together with you and others involved in your care to plan the move and give help and support.
