Leisure Services

Roger Brown is the Head of Leisure Services.  

Responsibilities include:

Parks Operations

Responsible for the management and maintenance of over 800 hectares of award winning parks, open spaces and countryside sites across the Borough.  These include 30 major sites including 6 Green Flag winning parks – the highest number of awards for any town in the south of England.  The team is also responsible for the greenkeeping of Queen’s Park Golf Course as well as bowling greens throughout the town.  The department is also responsible for the operation of Kings Park plant nursery, which has won a number of national awards for floral and bedding displays, and a full Floral Decoration and Floristry service are available.  Cleansing operations on the beach itself and within parks is also managed by the team.

The management team is based at East Cemetery Lodge, 80 Gloucester Road, adjacent to Kings Park. 

Business Development

Encompassing the following sub-sections:

1. Seafront Operations

Responsible for the management and maintenance of facilities across five miles of seafront stretching from Alum Chine in the west to Hengistbury Head in the east.  Facilities currently include beach chalet hire, promenade land train, Bournemouth pier attractions, deck chair hire, cliff lifts, beach wheelchairs and 6 seafront information offices.  The Seafront also promotes the Kidzone scheme to reduce numbers of lost children on the beach throughout the summer. 

The department works closely with other agencies to ensure public safety.  These include RNLI Beach Safety, St John’s Ambulance, local volunteer lifeguards, Marine Coastguard and Police Community Support Officers.

Bournemouth Seafront currently holds three Blue Flag Awards, Six Seaside Awards and was voted Britain’s Best Beach in 2004, out of a survey of 171 other UK resorts by ENCAMS

2. Seafront Catering & Arcades

Responsible for the management and operation of the Oasis, Bournemouth Pier Café, Pier Theatre, Showbar, Arcade, Russell Cotes Café, Best Break Kiosk Pier Approach and numerous ice cream outlets along the seafront.

3. IT Development

Responsible for IT development projects across Leisure & Tourism.

4. Finance & Administration

Responsible for financial administration across Bournemouth Seafront, Parks and Open Spaces.

5. Contracts

Responsible for the management of commercial and private lease agreements across Seafront, Parks and Open Spaces. 

The Management Team is based at the Bournemouth Seafront Information Centre.

Leisure Facilities Groups

Responsible for the management and operation of the Littledown and Stokewood Road Leisure Centres, Kinson Swimming Pool, Queen’s Park Golf Course.  In addition, the Sir David English Sports Centre is being managed by the team on behalf of the Bournemouth School Sports Trust.

The Management Team is based at the Littledown Leisure Centre. 

Landscape & Technical

Responsible for the design and maintenance of hard landscaping facilities including buildings across Bournemouth Seafront, Parks, Open Spaces and Countryside sites.

Leisure Development

Encompassing the following sub-sections:

1. Sports Development

Responsible for the promotion and development of sports provision for young people within and outside of the school environment.   Organises sports festival events and administers lottery funded Sports for All grants.

2. Play Development

Responsible for supervised playscheme provision for children aged from 4 years 9 months to 12.  Schemes run during school half term holidays and throughout the summer at various park locations in the Borough.

3. Community Parks & Countryside Team

Responsible for byelaw enforcement, interpretation, public events and activities within parks and open spaces.

The Management Team is based at the Sir David English Sports Centre.
