"However you disguise it, it's still litter! Stub it and Bin it!" - that's the message from Bournemouth Borough Council ahead of the new Smokefree legislation coming in to effect on the 1st July.
As part of a pro-active approach to tackling smoking related litter, the Council’s Street Services team is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the problem.
There will be 80 brand new ‘stub it’ bins, also known as cigarette disposal units (CDU’S), installed throughout the town centre and other ‘hotspot’ areas of the borough giving smokers every opportunity to stub it and bin it. The stub it bins will be located in the main precinct areas and come in a variety of forms, so look out for the ones that are free standing, attached to existing litter bins and also mounted on lampposts.
Come and visit our displays in Bournemouth town centre on Saturday 23rd, Wednesday 27th, Saturday 30th and Sunday 1st July with giant cigarettes handing out free ‘boodi’ eco friendly portable ashtrays to smokers using a bin to dispose of their litter.
As well as the new disposal units being installed, a high profile media campaign is underway with the strap line ‘stub it and bin it’. Giant banners will be displayed on refuse vehicles and posters in shops, clubs, pubs and businesses creating awareness that cigarette butts are litter and people could face an on the spot fine of £75 if they are caught dropping it.
Bournemouth Borough Council is working with NHS Smokestop and have teamed up with Fire 107.6 and ASDA store Bournemouth to promote the new legislation and council officers will be visiting local businesses to discuss how they can help encourage their staff and members of the public to think before they discard of their butts, recognizing that often the areas with the most smoking related litter are just outside there premises as staff cannot smoke inside.
Jim Clegg, Street Enforcement Manager, said: "The campaign is aimed at raising the awareness of residents and visitors who smoke, that if they discard their smoking related litter on the floor it will result in the Council issuing a £75 fixed penalty notice under The Cleaner Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005. The new ‘stub it’ bins have been provided to give smokers the option of disposing of their smoking related litter legally and in an environmentally-friendly way. It’s important that we do all we can to encourage the use of the new stub it bins and create awareness that cigarettes are litter as well."
