Following our recent discussion, I have been moved to write to you, on behalf of the Council, to express formally our gratitude for the commitment and efforts shown by you, your Governor colleagues, the Head Teacher and staff at TownsendPrimary School, in particular over the last twelve months.I acknowledge that this work was recognised in the school’s most recent Ofsted inspection report, which, as we know, took the school out of Special Measures and instead returned a ‘Notice to Improve’ judgement.
The Council would like to acknowledge that, as well as the governors and staff, the children of TownsendSchool and their parents have also worked extremely hard over the last 12 months to deliver improvements. This leaves a positive legacy for all concerned and especially for the children. As you know, our view is that the children in particular should be admired and praised for these efforts, and in no way be seen as any less capable than any other child in the borough. The hard work of all those involved in supporting TownsendSchool is recognised and valued by the Council.
The Cabinet and Council will be making decisions on the future of TownsendSchool next week. Our position in recommending closure is based on the need to ensure long-term sustainable improvement in the education of Bournemouth’s children. This includes a number of factors relating to TownsendPrimary School, of which you are aware, as well as the latest Ofsted report.
I know we share a recognised need to ensure the best possible outcome for the children. I can assure you of the Council’s very best endeavours in this regard.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr Malcolm Davies
Cabinet Member for Education & Children’s Services
