“Cut-price” tarmac could be far more costly than you think, Trading Standards Officers in
“The initial price might seem attractive,” commented Principal Trading Standards Officer Andy Sherriff, “but the final bill is often far in excess of what was originally agreed, while the work is shoddy.”
Officers are particularly concerned that vulnerable or elderly residents might feel threatened by the workers, and hand over money without seeking advice.
“The law is quite clear on this,” added Mr Sherriff. “Traders who call at your home like this should give people a 7-day cooling-off period and details of their right to cancel. Councillor David Smith,
Mr Sherriff urged local people to support their neighbours and relatives if they thought the gangs were in the area. “These criminals can blight the lives of those who they target with their threats, and they damage confidence in legitimate traders. Don’t even let them through your gate.”
