Rich and Strange Altered Book Exhibition
June 2-30
Visit Bournemouth Library to see a collection of over 70 altered books by national and international artists
The Rich and Strange books have been reworked, amended, extended, defaced or otherwise altered into something new and extraordinary by artists from South Africa, Italy, Brazil, Denmark, Vermont, Bristol, Edinburgh, London and around the UK.
The Rich and Strange project was organised by Celia Jackson, senior lecturer in art and photography at the Newport School of Art Media and Design. Celia Jackson, says: The central aim of the projectis to address people's preconceptions about libraries in particular, and books in general, and also about artists and art practice. The notion of recycling is important, too, as altered books' journey through the world by rescuing them from pulping or incineration.
The project was inspired by Regenerator, organised by Sarah Bodman from the Centre of Fine Print Research at Bristol School of Arts, Media and Design.
Altered Book Project for Bournemouth Artists
Visit the exhibition and be inspired to make your own altered book using a withdrawn library book. An exhibition of books made by local artists will be shown in Bournemouth Library later in the year, developed by Bournemouth arts Development.
The exhibition is available to view during Bournemouth library opening hours. Local artists who wish to make an altered book should contact Arts Development, to receive their withdrawn library book before the end of the exhibition on June 30.
