Bournemouth Arts Development programmes theatre and dance events where they address the strategic ambitions of Cultural Renewal and Public Art to:
· Raise the profile of the town centre as a place for good quality cultural events · Provide and develop opportunities for artists · Promote access and opportunity · Establish Bournemouth as place of excellence and best practice in the arts, regionally and nationally
Dance is developed within the framework of the Dorset, Bournemouth and Poole Dance Strategy (developed in partnership with Activate, local authorities and arts professionals) and the Bournemouth and Poole Joint Arts Plan.
The following events have taken place in Bournemouth over recent years, as part of the Bournemouth Borough Council Arts Development programme:
Attik Dance Free performances in 1999, in 2005 of 'Passion Fruit' and in 2006 of 'Shoppafrolics'. Part of an initiative to use town centre spaces for innovative arts performances and production.
Runga Rung This performance by Emergency Exit Arts included dance.
Dancing Years A play based on the words and experiences of older Bournemouth residents who took part in a music/life story project at three Bournemouth day centres. The play was written by Wendy Wharam in collaboration with Gill Horitz, Arts Development Officer, who co-led the life story sessions. Funding is being sought to enable production of the play.
Bournemouth Physical Activity Alliance A multi-agency partnership (including Bournemouth Borough Council) which supports, demonstrates and promotes a co-ordinated approach towards the provision of physical activity, including dance, focused towards improving and maintaining the well-being of the community in Bournemouth.
