Planning Permission
Bournemouth Borough Council, as the Local Planning Authority, has the power under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to approve or refuse permission for most development within the Borough's boundaries. The Planning Control Section deals with all cases where planning permission is required.  
 
The purpose of Planning Control is to act in the public interest, when determining planning applications, to ensure that buildings and uses of land are of the right kind in the right place, and that proposed new developments meet the Council's planning policies and long-term objectives.  
 
Many small house extensions and other minor works are classed as permitted development that do not require formal planning permission A booklet explaining this in greater detail is available from Planning and Transport, or visit:

Some existing unauthorised uses and structures may actually be lawful by virtue of the time they have existed. Such uses and structures can become fully authorised by obtaining a Certificate of Lawfulness, providing sufficient documentary proof can be supplied with the relevant application.   In all cases, however, it is advisable to ask the council for written confirmation before you carry out any development.
