The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) issued the ‘English Indices of Deprivation 2007’ in December 2007.  The Indices have been constructed by the Social Disadvantage Research Centre at the University of Oxford for the ODPM.

The new index is based on the approach, structure and methodology that were used to create the previous index in 2004.  The 2007 index updates the 2004 version using more up-to-date data.  There are seven domains and eight sub-domains:

• Income Deprivation (comprising 6 indicators)
  • Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) 2007
  • Income Deprivation Affecting Older People Index (IDAOPI) 2007
• Employment Deprivation (comprising 6 indicators)
• Health Deprivation and Disability (comprising 4 indicators)
• Education, Skills and Training Deprivation (comprising 7 indicators)
  • Children/young people (comprising 6 indicators)
  • Skills (comprising 1 indicator)
• Barriers to Housing and Services (comprising 7 indicators)
  • Wider barriers sub-domain (comprising 3 indicators)
  • Geographical barriers sub-domain (comprising 4 indicators)
• Crime and Disorder (comprising 4 indicators)
• Living Environment (comprising 4 indicators)
  • The ‘indoors’ living environment (comprising 2 indicators)
  • The ‘outdoors’ living environment (comprising 2 indicators)

Where possible, the information used for the indicators relate to 2005 and the rankings for the domains and sub-domains are produced at the Lower Layer Super Output Area level (LSOA). Click links for LSOA boundary map and area names
