There are nearly 17,000 bedspaces in hotels in Bournemouth and a further 6,000 in guest houses, bed and breakfasts, etc.  At the time of the 2001 Census, 1,586 properties were second or holiday homes.  There are nearly 1.5 million trips to Bournemouth each year with visitors staying a total of 5.1 million nights and spending over a quarter of a million pounds.

Tourism generates around 7,000 jobs (full-time equivalents or FTE) or 10,000 individual jobs in direct occupations.  Over 60% of these jobs are based in the accommodation and catering sections.  In addition, there are 2,300 FTE or 2,700 jobs generated indirectly by tourism.  It has been estimated that the gross wage income generated by tourism in Bournemouth is over £130 million.
