Transport and Travel

This section looks at data relating to travel and transport.  Click on the links on the left to access information on transport and travel within the borough.

The travel and transport section is divided into four sections: road, rail, sea and air.  On the travel home page are details of travel to work from the 1991 and 2001 Censuses, and links to other transport sections of the Council’s website.

Roads

In the roads section are details of the number cars owned by households from the 2001 Census – there were 79,936 cars and 72,212 households; 21 mph is the average traffic speed in Bournemouth and Poole; and numbers of traffic accidents and casualties.  Additional data from the 2001 Census can be found by clicking here.

Rail

The rail section contains the number of rail passenger journeys to and from Bournemouth station.  The figure shows a steady increase year on year from 1.59 million in 1996/97 to 2.27 in 2003/04.

Air

Data on the number of aircraft movements, passengers and freight carried at Bournemouth Airport is available.  In 2005/06, there were 83,640 aircraft movements (a movement is a landing or a take-off).  Passenger air transport movements make up a relatively small proportion of total aircraft movements, just 12.4%.

Sea

The Port of Poole provides both commercial port facilities and ferry terminal for cross channel car ferries to the France and to the Channel Islands.  For 2002/03, around 1.9 million tonnes of goods came through the port, and 744,000 people and 228,300 cars and caravans used the ferry facilities.
