Help with safe and independent living in your home
Occupational Therapy provide help and support to:
people with a physical disability and/or a long term illness
older people
their carers.
Our aim is enable disabled people and their carers to live safely and independently in their own home.
If you need
a wheelchair or walking aid please contact your GP
a back rest, pressure mattress or specialist nursing equipment please contact your district nurse.
What we do
Assess your difficulties with everyday living tasks such as getting in and out of a chair or on and off the toilet.
Give advice to you or your carer on alternative methods of managing these activities.
Advise carers on moving and handling techniques eg to assist someone to get in or out of bed or help them move up or down a bed, then provide written instructions for reference.
Loan equipment to help with day to day living.
Help with minor adaptations to your home such as a grab rail by the toilet or an additional stair rail.
Advise you about equipment you can buy to help with day to day tasks in your home, such as for meal preparation or personal care. We also provide information sheets and details of local suppliers.
Give advice about possible adaptations to your property such as level access shower or stairlift . Refer to relevant partners within the Council or liaise with housing associations. Where appropriate, refer to the Housing Grants Officer for a Disabled Facilities Grant.
Liase with other people involved in your care such as social workers, care managers and health staff.
Act as specialist advisors on all aspects of disability such as specialist housing or design of public buildings.
Make referrals to other agencies.
Work with hospital staff to assist with arrangements for discharge.
Are there any charges?
There is no charge for:
An assessment of your needs.
Advice and information to help you with day to day living.
The loan of certain esential equipment if your assessed needs meet our criteria.
Advice to enable you to purchase items such as bath equipment or special cooking utensils.
There may be charges for certain adaptations.
