Cycle training is vital to a child's safety. A bicycle often starts as just a toy, but quickly becomes a means of transport.
Children need to develop knowledge and skills to prepare them for journeys on roads, to shops, friends and maybe school too.
Cycle training is vital if children are to survive on the roads.
Bournemouth Council's Road Safety Team manage and promote a two-part scheme for young riders.
The scheme consists of one course which is taken over a period of 6 hours and is organised and provided by the Road Safety Team.
Completing the course and receiving a certificate and badge, does not give the children a licence that guarantees the safety of this child to cycle unsupervised on the road, but the cycle training course should have provided the child(ren) with basic safety skill and experience of the main manoeuvres associated with cycling on quiet roads. As the child(ren) may not have experienced cycling in busy traffic, the decision for the child(ren) to cycle to and from school unsupervised will be the decision of parents / guardians.
The course instructors are trained and registered by the Road Safety Team and are assisted by volunteer helpers, ensuring one adult supervises every 4 children on each course.
Phase two of the course consists of on-road training for children in School Years 6 and above.
This course takes place on a road and teaches on-road traffic skills. Quiet areas are selected, where the riders are taught manoeuvres whilst sharing the road responsibility with other drivers and riders.
A total of six hours instruction is given over 4 x 1.5 hour sessions and / or 2 x 3 hour sessions in the Summer Holidays. A continual assessment of standard and ability takes place throughout the course.
A certificate is awarded at the end of the course, providing an acceptable standard has been met.
