The cost of accidents is based on the Government guidelines, consisting of the Department Of Transport, Highways Economic Notes, and the ‘Valuation of Prevention of Road Accidents and Casualties’. The figures represent the period between 2001 and 2003. They are based on costs such as medical, rescue services, insurance claims, human costs, loss of earnings, repairs etc. The average value of prevention, per accident by severity and class of road in an urban area such as Bournemouth are as follows:
