This is a totally free facility which links drivers and passengers willing to share car journeys. Car sharing not only potentially saves money but also helps ease congestion, enabling better usage of road space and reducing the impact of road traffic on our environment.
Many motorists must have sat in a queue of traffic and noticed that most of the cars are occupied by just the driver. The likelihood is that a proportion of these journeys are going from similar starting points to the same destination. This scheme links up potential matches for those motorists willing to share.
Car Sharing can result in a number of important benefits, above all as an effective way of reducing peak hour congestion. Car Sharing reduces the demand for parking spaces and can ease the stress caused by driving and offer an opportunity to socialise too. Cost savings are an important issue; the annual saving on fuel is estimated at around £200 per annum for a regular commuter journey of just 10 miles shared by two people.
The scheme has been put together by the three local authorities in conjunction with liftshare.com the UK’s leading provider of Internet car sharing schemes with over 47,000 registered users. The website is easy to use and registration only takes a few minutes with all personal details kept confidential. For those without access to the Internet, a dedicated call centre (08700 11 11 99) helps you find car-sharing partners. You do not even have to own a vehicle to participate, as the system also links potential passengers with drivers.
A number of local businesses already operate car sharing facilities, but this area-wide scheme links those willing to car share on a much wider basis and it's not just for work purposes. The service can match any journey whether for school, leisure or even shopping.
It's accepted that car sharing may not suit all, but even sharing just once a week or whenever possible can still have an impact.
