We all use energy in our homes - more now than ever before. Whether to make life easier with washing machines and tumble driers, keeping us warm with central heating or entertaining us with television, music, computers or games machines.

No cost tips

• If you have central heating, turn the thermostat down by just 1 degree - this can save up to 10% on your fuel bill.
• Defrosting your fridge and freezer regularly will lower their running costs.
• If you have a washing machine, save energy and water by using it for full loads only.
• When making a hot drink, only boil the water you need.
• Use your plug - letting hot water run down the drain is expensive.
• Don t leave your television on standby.

Low cost tips

• Insulate your loft to a depth of at least 250mm. You cold save as much as £70 a year.
• Fit a hot water tank jacket of at least 80mm. This could save you £10 a year.
• Lag hot water pipes - saving another £10 a year.
• Replace your most used light bulbs with low energy ones.
• Draught proof windows and doors - potential saving of £20 a year
• Fit a hot water cylinder thermostat (normal setting: 60 deg C) for a £15 a year saving.
• Put a thick lining on curtains and tuck them behind radiators for a £20 a year saving.
• Get any dripping taps repaired  to save £5 a year.

Insulation will improve the energy efficiency of your home, save you money, help tackle climate change and protect the environment for future generations.

There are many grants available to help you. You may even have work done for free if you:

• Recieve certain benefits and are over 60, have children under 16 or are pregnant
• Are over 60 and under 70 years of age and live in a property in Council Tax Band A,B,C or D
• Are a landlord with tenants receiving benefits
