An Introduction to Council Tax
What do you need to know?
Council Tax
- When you are 18 years old the Government states that you become liable for payment of Council Tax.
- If you are 18 years old and living with both parents it is unlikely that you will need to pay anything - unless your parents ask you to contribute!
- If you live with one parent and there are no other over 18's living with you, the charge will increase to reflect there being two adult occupants at the address. Information on the charge differences for single and joint adult occupants can be viewed on the Discounts and Exemptions page.
Students - Exempt or not?
- As with every Local Authority Bournemouth Borough Council are required to provide Council Tax bills and collect Council Tax payments.
- If you are a student then you may be able to receipt an exemption from payment of Council Tax.
- This exemption depends on the type of course and institute at which you are studying.
- Further information regarding exemptions, who gets them and how to claim them can be found on the Discounts and Exemptions page and the Guide to Students and Student Occupied Properties page.
- Bournemouth Borough Council is obliged by law to continue with recovery of Council Tax until information is provided that prevents a charge from being applied, such as a Student Exemption Certificate.
- There is important information displayed on the Some Problem Areas page, which students resitting units should be aware of.
Remember that you will become liable for Council Tax as soon as your course finishes.
