Household Bin Collections - Food Waste Container

We take your food waste and turn it into compost

In the first two years of food waste collections we recycled over 4,300 tonnes of food waste, an average of 8.4 tonnes per day. This food waste was composted locally in Dorset and generated enough energy to power the whole recycling process as well as 300 households for an entire year. A liquid soil improver was also made from the food waste and this has been spread on nearby farming land in Dorset & Hampshire.

Your Food Waste Container is for recycling your food waste and it is emptied weekly.

You can pick up a new roll of compostable caddy liners from your local library or the following Community Centres; Strouden, Howe Croft, Moordown and Ensbury Park.

Bournemouth University students who reside in a Bournemouth address can pick up a new roll from the Student Centre on Talbot Campus.

All cooked and uncooked food can be recycled including:

Yes, please

  • Dairy
  • Bread, cakes and pastries
  • Pasta and rice
  • Teabags and coffee grounds
  • Egg shells
  • Plate scrapings

No, thanks

Please don’t put these into your food waste container:

  • Garden waste
  • Plastic, paper or cardboard recyclables (Big Bin please)
  • Plastic bags
  • Oil or liquid fats
  • Pet waste
  • Nappies

How do I use my Food Waste Container?

You have:

  • A small kitchen caddy (5L) – a handy size to keep in your kitchen
  • An outside Food Waste Container (12L or 23L)
  • Compostable caddy liners – line your kitchen caddy with a compostable bag before you fill it

During the week, collect food scraps in your small kitchen caddy. When you want to, you can transfer the contents to the outside 12L and 23L Food Waste Container.

Please remember:

  • Don’t place your food waste container inside your bins
  • Put your container out for collection separately - so we can see it - directly next to, or on top of, your wheelie bin
  • Lock your container by putting the handle in the upright position.

Compostable liners

Before you put any food in your Food Waste Container, please make sure you line it first using a compostable liner.

You can also use newspaper to line your container or nothing at all.

Please don’t use plastic bags, normal bin bags or even biodegradable plastic bags as they don’t break down into compost. The compostable liners that we give you are especially designed to break down and compost with your food waste.

How do I get more compostable caddy liners?

We no longer deliver compostable caddy liners but it's still simple to get more - you can pick some up from your local library or the following Community Centres; Strouden, Howe Croft, Moordown and Ensbury Park. Just take proof of address with you (a household bill, driving licence or bank statement) and collect your free roll of compostable liners. Please check the opening hours for the Community Centres before visiting.

What if my bin isn’t emptied?

You might want to double check you have the right day. Please remember on your recycling week your food waste bin is emptied by a different vehicle, so will be collected at a different time to your recycling big bin.

If your bin hasn’t been emptied, please wait until the next day before you report it because our crews work all day, they may collect your rubbish later than you expected.
