Household Recycling Collections - Big Bin
How you can recycle more at home
We are having ongoing problems with recycling that contains items that can't be recycled. Textiles (for example, clothing, bedding, towels or linen) and electrical items can't be recycled in your Big Bin.
You can take these to Neighbourhood Recycling Centres or Millhams Household Recycling Centre
When do I put my bin out?
We empty your Big Bin once every 2 weeks on the alternate week to which we empty your Little Bin.
Please put your Big Bin out by 5am on your bin day.
If you want to put your bin out the day before, you can put it out after 6pm. Please bring it in as soon as you can so it doesn’t block the pavement.

Where should I put my bin for collection?
Place your bin where we can easily reach it without having to enter your property. You could put it:
- At the end of your drive.
- At the end of your garden path.
- On the pavement, close to your house.
The bin needs to be on the very edge of your property or on the pavement. If you have a gate, please leave it open for us.
What if my bin isn’t emptied?
You might want to double check you have the right bin day. Remember we only empty Big Bins once every 2 weeks.
If your bin hasn’t been emptied on the correct bin day, please wait until the next day, if your bin still hasn’t been emptied you can report it.

What can I put in my Big Bin?
Your Big Bin (240L) is for household recycling.
Please put the following items in your Big Bin:
- Cans, tins and aerosols (but not butane or propane aerosols)
- Glass bottles and jars
- Plastic bottles and food containers
- Food and drink cartons
- Foil and foil trays
You can now recycle even more items at the kerbside. We collect household batteries and small electrical items, measuring no bigger than 30cm x 20cm x 20cm, alongside your other recycling. Find out more about recycling Electrical items and batteries.
Put recyclables loose in your bin. Please don’t bag them.
Wash and squash your recycling before you put it in your Big Bin so they don’t have bits of food left in them.
Take lids off milk containers and bottles to make it easier to squash them down. This helps most of the space in your bin. Lids and bottle tops can also be recycled, so make sure you put these in the Big Bin.
Please don’t put these items in your Big Bin:
- Garden waste (try composting)
- Rubble or building materials
- Light bulbs
- Broken glass
- Glass kitchenware (for example, drinking glasses, pyrex, glass dishes)
- Small electrical items
