We license Hackney Carriages and Private Hire vehicles

We make sure that every taxi driver has an excellent knowledge of the area, a good grasp of English and, most importantly, is a safe and cautious driver.

Which taxi is which?

We license both hackney carriage taxis and private hire vehicles.

You flag down a hackney carriage while out in Bournemouth. They can drive you anywhere in Bournemouth for a fare. They’re easily recognisable as they’re mostly a pale yellow.

A private hire vehicle is one that you can book ahead of travelling. A private hire vehicle can’t pick up people along the side of the road. They need to be booked first through an operator.

You can find out about the rules and regulations covering our taxis in our blue book

Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles – information for drivers

The Equality Act 2010 requires local authorities to identify all vehicles that are deemed to be wheelchair accessible and publish these on a public list to allow people with disabilities easier access to suitable transportation.

The list now published also places the drivers of these vehicles with a legal duty to provide additional assistance to passengers to allow them to travel in their wheelchair where possible. If you drive a vehicle that is on the list and you refuse to provide the required assistance you may be prosecuted and your license may be suspended or revoked.

If you cannot provide the required assistance due to a medical problem, you can apply for a medical exemption certificate, the application form must be completed by your doctor and submitted to the Licensing team for consideration.
