On 20 February the Prime Minister announced that the date of the European Union Referendum will be 23 June 2016.

A Referendum is a direct vote where the voters will be asked to answer a question. In this case, the voters will be asked a question in regards to the UK's membership of the European Union.

The proposed EU Referendum question was:

Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

Remain a member of the European Union

Leave the European Union

All households were sent a booklet between the 16th - 21st May which provided further information on the EU Referendum along with details of the lead campaigners for the Remain and Leave campaigners.
