Information and registering to vote
On 23 June 2016 there was a Referendum on whether or not Britain should remain in the European Union.
The registration deadline for the EU Referendum was midnight on 9th June.
However, you can register online for future elections/referendums via www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
The European Union Referendum Act received Royal Assent on 17 December 2015.
It was declared that the Referendum provided for in the Act must take place no later than 31 December 2017.
On 20 February the Prime Minister announced that the date of the European Union Referendum will be 23 June 2016.
A Referendum is a direct vote where the voters will be asked to answer a question. In this case, the voters will be asked a question in regards to the UK's membership of the European Union.
The proposed EU Referendum question was:
Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?
Remain a member of the European Union
Leave the European Union
All households were sent a booklet between the 16th - 21st May which provided further information on the EU Referendum along with details of the lead campaigners for the Remain and Leave campaigners.
