Victory in Europe

The end of World War II in Europe

Victory in Europe Day was on Tuesday 8 May 1945 and officially announced the end of World War Two when German General Jodl signed the unconditional surrender document that formally ended war in Europe.

On 8 May 2015, a wreath laying ceremony took place and a special beacon was lit on the cliff top at Fisherman’s Walk to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day). This provided an opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who fought in the war and gave time to reflect and remember the sacrifices that were made abroad and at home.

Bournemouth Historian, John Walker, has provided a short talk of what it was it was like in Bournemouth on VE Day in 1945.
