Today (18 November is was announced that Ordnance Survey (OS) has been picked by the government to lead a consortium that includes the 5G Innovation Centre and Met Office in developing a mapping and planning tool necessary to enable a 5G network.

The Council has championed Bournemouth as a test bed destination for the tool and we are delighted to have received this national recognition.

Why is 5G is important for the UK?

  • Demand for digital services and applications will continue to rise rapidly, with a consequent acceleration in the amount of data being carried over networks

  • Increasing speed and capacity of broadband infrastructure and new technologies like 5G result in proven long term economic growth, particularly empowering SMEs

What is the opportunity for Bournemouth?

  • Bournemouth could now be well placed to become one of the first places in the UK to trial a 5G network and the Council will be actively exploring this opportunity
  • Attract talent to enable local companies to thrive and new companies to start
  • Generate inward investment into the area
  • Develop further partnerships with OS using geospatial data
