How to make a claim for Universal Credit, and things you need to have to hand.
Universal Credit will start from the date you make your claim. It will only be backdated in exceptional circumstances. Do not delay making your claim - you will lose money.
You will need to make a claim for Universal Credit online.
If you do not have access to a computer or the internet, you may be able to use a computer at the Jobcentre, Town Hall, or any Bournemouth Library (this is free for library members). Access may be limited. If you need help making your claim you can also come to the Customer Service Centre, Bournemouth Town Hall, St Stephens Road where a member of staff will assist you. Before you start
It will take between 20 and 40 minutes to make the claim online. Make sure you have enough time to complete the application and that you have the following information before you start as you cannot save your application and return to it later:
- Your National Insurance Number
- Details of the bank, building society or Post Office account you want Universal Credit paid into
- Your rent agreement (if you have one)
- Details of your savings or other capital
- Details of any income that’s not from work (e.g. from an insurance or pension plan)
- Details of any other benefits you’re getting
If you're making your application online and need help and support contact the Universal Credit helpline on 0345 600 0723 whilst you are online and they will assist you with making your claim.
After you have made your claim you will be contacted to attend an interview at your Jobcentre. Universal Credit is not paid by Bournemouth Borough Council.
