All other household waste, including garden waste, recyclables and general waste will still be accepted free of charge.  

Why were the charges introduced?

The materials that charges are being made for are not classed as household waste. Therefore the Council does not have to accept them at Millhams Household Recycling Centre or accept them for free.

To avoid confusion, household waste comprises of the unwanted contents of the house and not part of the house itself. Construction waste includes items from the repair or improvement of houses (for example, DIY type waste). Also waste created from landscaping or garden alterations, such as dismantling a rockery or digging up a patio/concrete hard standing.

Vehicle tyres and gas canisters are not classed as household waste.

However as residents still need to throw away these materials from time to time. Rather than withdrawing the service, we have continued to accept these wastes at Millhams for a small charge. It cost Bournemouth tax payers more than £130,000 to dispose of these non-household items in 2015. The charges paid will cover disposal costs.

How can I pay?

When you arrive at Millhams Household Recycling Centre, follow the left hand lane at the first corner.

At the site entrance, you will be asked to show proof of residency (Council Tax bill or Driver’s Licence). You will be asked what materials you have to dispose of. For chargeable items, you will then be directed to the disposal point for your waste and payment kiosk. This is on the left hand side as you enter.

Payment can be made by debit/credit card (not American Express) or cash (up to and including £20 notes) only.

What do you mean by 'bag' or 'sheet'?

A bag is a rubble bag no greater than 535mm x 820mm (21 inches x 32 inches). One ceramic basin or one toilet cistern will be charged as one item/bag.

Please take care when removing asbestos and do not break up unnecessarily. Ideally Asbestos should be wrapped for transportation in a damp sheet, cardboard or plastic bags.

A sheet of asbestos is a small domestic roofing sheet or similar. A sheet of plasterboard are those that are sold at DIY stores. 

Is there a restriction on how much soil or rubble can be brought to the site?

There is no limit on the number of bags that can be brought to the site provided payment is made for the correct amount. Commercial waste can also be disposed of at Millhams. Use the commercial drop-off point where a charge will be made via the weighbridge. 

What do you mean by DIY Waste?

Any waste that is disposed of in the soil and rubble skip. Items such as ceramic basins and toilet pans and cisterns. No charge will be made for ceramic plates and plant pots which are classed as household waste – if you have these items you will be asked to put them in a different container.

Should I separate household and non-household waste?

Yes. If you are coming to Millhams with both types of waste it will make your visit easier and quicker if you pack your vehicle so it is clear what is household and what is not. As you will visit the non-household part of the site first it is best if you pack this last.
