Bournemouth Cemeteries and Burials
Coronavirus (COVID-19): change to service
On advice from the government regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), cemetery and crematorium grounds are only open to those attending a service or visiting a grave. There is no access to Books of Remembrance.
Read more about changes to funeral services including a temporary reduction to cremation and burial fees.
There are four cemeteries in Bournemouth. At each cemetery there is a chapel for burial services. This can be used for a full service, or the coffin can be brought to the cemetery for burial following a service at another venue.
There is a choice of consecrated and non-consecrated burial areas to provide for all faiths and beliefs. We will prepare the grave in advance. A burial attendant will be on hand to make sure everything runs smoothly.
There can be up to three burials in each grave. If you would like to make a family plot for future generations you must ask for this at the first burial. Up to six sets of cremated remains can also be buried in a grave once there is no more room for coffins.
After the mourners leave, the grave is filled and covered with turf or grass seed. Floral tributes will be placed on the grave and removed after ten to fourteen days.
Graves are checked six months after the burial and are reseeded and topped up with additional earth if needed. The grave will be maintained as part of general grounds keeping at the cemetery.
We take care to ensure that our cemeteries and graves are well looked after. This helps to provide a calm, safe and peaceful atmosphere for visitors. The only dogs allowed are guide dogs.
Dogs
Unfortunately only Registered Assistance Dogs are allowed in the Cemeteries or Crematorium.
