Starting School

Your child needs a school place before they can attend school

Starting school is a big step in your child’s life. Before they can start, you need to apply for a school place.

Choosing the right school for your child will make a difference to their future development and happiness.

It's important to apply on time to give yourself the best chance of a place at the school you would most like.

When to apply

You need to apply for a primary school place the year before your child is due to start. All children must be in education the term following their fifth birthday, so most children start when they are four.

How do I apply?

You can apply for a school online if you live within the BCP Council area and want to apply for a school within this area. The online system can be used from the first week of September, in the year you need to apply for a school place.

Paper forms are also available in most pre-schools and day nurseries and from Bournemouth Children's Information Service at our customer service centre.
They can also be obtained at Poole Central Library above the Dolphin Centre.

If you don't live within the BCP Council area, you must apply to the local authority where you live (this will be where you pay your council tax). Get in touch with them to find out how the process works in your area.
