An overview of the 2011 Census Results

The first results from the 2011 Census were released on 16th July 2012 with regular further releases of statistics.

Quick Facts from the 2011 Census

  • The usually resident population in Bournemouth as at the 27th March 2011 was 183,491, an increase of 12% since 2001 (in England and Wales and the South West the increase was 7%).
  •  The response rate in Bournemouth was around 93%, slightly below the overall response rate of 94% in England and Wales.
  • The Census estimate of households for those household spaces occupied by at least one usual resident was 82,374, an increase of around 14% since 2001.
  • The estimate of short-term residents i.e. those resident for more than 3 months but less than a year was 1,438. 
  • The census estimates by five year age band revealed the age groups that experienced the most significant change since 2001.  In absolute numbers the 20-24 year olds had seen the biggest population increase.  The numbers in their 70s has declined since 2001.
