Bike Share for Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Coronavirus (COVID-19): change to service

On advice from the government regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19), Beryl Bikes has provided guidance to ensure you stay safe when using shared bikes.

NHS staff and key workers (including in the social care sector) can now register for free usage of the bikes.

We have partnered with Beryl for a five-year contract to deliver an innovative Bike Share scheme across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole.

Beryl’s distinctive green bikes are now a familiar sight across the conurbation and can be easily hired via the Beryl App. The App tracks the GPS location of the bike allowing users to access and unlock any Beryl bike simply using a smartphone.

Over 1000 brand new bikes are available with three speed gears and an easy to ride step through design. Handlebars and seats are fully adjustable for a wide range of riders, from 4’11” to 6’5”.

The bikes are available for instant hire at over 300 convenient parking locations at key destinations including rail and bus stations, town centre shopping areas, University campuses and tourist attractions.

How does it work?

The App can be downloaded on the Apple app store for iPhone, and the Google Play Store for Android users. Riders can choose to pay each time they cycle, or purchase “Minute Bundles”.

Users will be informed of the location of ‘Beryl Bays’, the preferred parking locations to leave the bikes. The scheme also allows users to safely park the bikes elsewhere in the BCP area by paying an additional convenience fee.

The operator keeps track of all the bikes via GPS and will redistribute them as required to maximise availability.

How much does it cost?

You can hire a Beryl bike using the Beryl app, then ride it anywhere in the BCP area for 5p a minute. Riders have a payment choice of:

  • pay-as-you-ride - £1 unlock fee
  • minute bundles – this is the best value for multiple rides as there is no unlock fee each time. 100 minutes of riding time costs just £5!
  • 24 Hour Day Pass - £12.

Providing a healthy transport choice and helping cut congestion

Over 47,000 different riders have used the Bike Share scheme since launch last year, undertaking 235,000 journeys and covering an impressive 1 million km.

Surveys have shown that for 35% of BCP Beryl riders it is the first time they have been on a bike in over 5 years!

In addition research shows 18% of all journeys would previously have been made by car, so the scheme is directly assisting with reducing congestion in our conurbation.

Future plans

Future developments include the introduction of a fleet of electric bikes for hire. Businesses could also be offered the use of shared electric cargo bikes to assist with local deliveries and help cut both carbon emissions and congestion.
